Frequently Asked Questions
What should a rider do after a motorcycle crash?
If possible, move to a safe location, call 911, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor. Some injuries, including internal trauma, are not immediately obvious. Cooperate with responding officers and get a copy of the official report once it's available.
Are motorcycle crashes more common at intersections or merge points?
Yes, intersections and highway on-ramps or merge areas are common sites for motorcycle collisions because of limited visibility and the short time drivers have to spot a smaller vehicle in traffic.
What gear helps reduce injury severity for riders?
A DOT-approved helmet, abrasion-resistant jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots all help reduce the severity of injuries in a crash. Reflective or brightly colored gear can also improve visibility to other drivers.
Can road surface conditions affect motorcycle safety?
Yes. Uneven pavement, debris, gravel, or wet roads reduce traction and can affect a rider's ability to brake or maneuver safely, especially at higher speeds on highways.
