PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Northampton County, Pa., Oct. 11, 2026 — Two people were taken to the hospital on Friday night, October 9, after two separate crashes shut down Route 33 southbound in Northampton County, according to a county emergency supervisor.
The first crash happened in Plainfield Township just after 7 p.m. and reportedly involved three vehicles. About 45 minutes later, a second crash occurred less than a mile away in Bushkill Township, this one involving a commercial vehicle and a passenger vehicle.
Route 33 southbound was closed between the Wind Gap and Tatamy exits while crews worked both scenes. The road has since reopened to traffic.
It has not been determined whether the two crashes are connected in any way. The extent of the injuries to the two people hospitalized has not been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
We wish the injured a complete and speedy recovery.
When Multi-Vehicle Crashes Cluster on Highways Like Route 33
Crashes involving several vehicles in close succession tend to concentrate around the evening commute, when traffic volume is highest, and drivers are tired after a full day. Visibility starts to drop after sunset in the fall months, and headlight glare combined with darker road surfaces can make it harder for drivers to judge following distance or react to slowing traffic ahead.
Weekend nights add another layer of risk. Traffic mixes commuters heading home with people driving to dinner, events, or social gatherings, and that unevenness in speed and attention can set up chain-reaction collisions, especially where a highway narrows near interchanges or exit ramps. A single sudden stop in heavy, fast-moving traffic is usually enough to trigger a second crash nearby within minutes, as apparently happened here.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 2,442,581 people were injured in traffic crashes in 2023. That volume reflects how commonly ordinary driving conditions, not just extreme weather or obvious hazards, produce injury crashes on highways across the country.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I'm involved in a multi-vehicle crash?
Move to a safe location if possible, check for injuries, and call 911. Exchange information with other drivers and avoid discussing fault at the scene. Even if you feel fine, document the scene with photos if you're able.
What injuries are common in highway car accidents?
Whiplash, concussions, broken bones, and soft-tissue injuries are frequent outcomes, even in crashes that look minor from the outside. Some injuries, particularly head and neck injuries, may not show symptoms right away.
What typically causes crashes like these?
Common factors include following too closely, distracted driving, speed that's too fast for traffic conditions, and reduced visibility after dark. Higher speeds also mean less time to react and more force at the moment of impact, which tends to increase the severity of injuries.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Plainfield Township, PA
If you're involved in a crash on a highway like this one, try to move to the shoulder if your vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so. Turn on hazard lights and call 911 right away, even for what seems like a minor collision, since some injuries take hours to become noticeable.
Seek a medical evaluation as soon as possible after any crash involving multiple vehicles or a commercial vehicle, since the forces involved can cause injuries that aren't immediately obvious. Get a copy of the police report once it's available, and keep records of any medical visits connected to the crash. Reach out to your insurance company promptly to begin the claims process.
