POMONA, Los Angeles County, Calif., Sept. 16, 2026 — A motorcyclist was hurt Tuesday afternoon, September 15, when a crash involving three vehicles blocked lanes on eastbound I-10 near Fairplex Drive in Pomona, according to authorities.

The California Highway Patrol log shows the crash was first reported just before 5 p.m., listing a gray SUV colliding with a dark-colored motorcycle. The rider went down in the roadway, and the collision reportedly also involved a Kia Telluride and a Kia SUV. Authorities requested paramedics to treat the downed rider.

Dispatch logs show the crash blocked the HOV lane and the number one eastbound lane, and additional units were sent to close off the number one lane entirely as crews worked the scene.

The California Highway Patrol continues reviewing the crash. We wish those injured a speedy recovery.

When Motorcycle Crashes Involving Left Turns and Lane Changes Happen Most

Motorcycle collisions with cars tend to cluster around the times when traffic is heaviest and drivers are distracted by merging, turning or changing lanes, such as the evening commute on freeways like I-10. Late afternoon sun angle can also make a motorcycle harder to spot against glare or shadow, especially for drivers scanning multiple lanes at once.

Weekday rush hour brings a mix of aggressive lane changes, sudden braking and drivers checking phones or navigation, all of which cut down the time a driver has to notice a motorcycle beside or behind them. Motorcycles are narrower and can be hidden in a blind spot far more easily than a car, so a driver’s routine head check may miss one entirely.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 33 motorcyclists who died were not wearing helmets in 2023. That figure points to how much helmet use can matter once a crash happens, regardless of the time of day or the cause of the initial collision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries than typical car crashes?

A motorcycle offers no frame, airbags or crumple zone around the rider. Even at moderate speeds, a rider can be thrown from the bike and strike the pavement or another vehicle directly.

How do left-turning or lane-changing cars end up hitting motorcycles?

Drivers often misjudge a motorcycle’s speed or distance because it presents a smaller visual target than a car. A driver turning left or merging across lanes may look for cars and simply not register the motorcycle in time.

What can drivers do to spot motorcycles more easily in traffic?

Checking mirrors and blind spots twice, signaling early, and giving extra following distance around motorcycles all help. Slowing down before a lane change gives a driver more time to notice a rider who may be closer than expected.

What should a rider do immediately after a motorcycle crash?

Move to safety if possible, call 911, and avoid removing riding gear or a helmet unless necessary, since it can help stabilize injuries. Get checked by medical personnel even if pain isn’t immediately obvious, and get a copy of the police report once available.
