What Makes High-Speed Rollovers So Deadly on Montana’s Rural Highways?
Rural highways in Montana, including stretches of US-2, run through wide open terrain where drivers can reach very high speeds in a short amount of time. When a vehicle leaves the roadway at those speeds, the risk of rolling increases sharply, especially on uneven ground or soft shoulders. Rollovers are among the deadliest types of crashes because occupants are exposed to multiple points of impact as the vehicle tumbles.
Speed is one of the most consistent factors in fatal rollover crashes across the state. The faster a vehicle is moving when it loses control, the less time the driver has to correct course before leaving the road. Montana’s long stretches of highway with few barriers or guardrails leave very little margin for error when something goes wrong.
