Frequently Asked Questions
What gear helps protect a bicyclist from serious injury?
Reflective clothing, bike lights, and a properly fitted helmet all improve a rider's visibility and reduce the severity of injury in a crash, especially in low-light conditions like early morning hours.
What typically causes crashes between vehicles and bicyclists or motorcyclists?
Common factors include a driver failing to see a rider in time, poor lighting, speeding, and riders or drivers misjudging how long it takes to safely cross or turn through traffic.
Why do these crashes tend to cause more serious injuries than crashes between two cars?
A bicyclist or motorcyclist has little to no physical protection compared to someone inside a vehicle, so the same impact that might cause minor damage in a car-to-car crash can cause severe injury or death to a rider.
How do turning or crossing maneuvers lead to collisions with bicyclists?
When a rider crosses a busy roadway, especially at night, a driver may not see them until it's too late to stop, particularly on a multi-lane highway like US-19 where traffic moves at higher speeds.
What to Do After a Bicyclist Crash in Port Richey, FL
If you witness or are involved in a crash involving a bicyclist, call 911 right away and stay on scene until help arrives. Even if injuries aren't immediately obvious, it's worth getting checked by a medical professional, since some injuries don't show symptoms right away. Take photos of the scene if it's safe to do so, and get contact information from any witnesses nearby. Once law enforcement arrives, ask how to obtain a copy of the official crash report, since it can be useful for insurance purposes later. Port Richey's stretch of US-19 carries heavy traffic at all hours, so anyone walking, biking, or driving along it should stay alert and give themselves extra time to react.
