Portland Boro, PA (October 27, 2025) – A tragic off-road vehicle crash on Sunday evening claimed the life of one person and left another injured after a dune buggy overturned in a wooded area near 101 Delaware Ave, close to the Park & Ride in Portland Borough.

Emergency crews from Fire 33, Fire 37, EMS 27, and Monroe EMS 18 were dispatched around 5:00 p.m. following reports of a serious accident involving a recreational vehicle. According to initial reports, two individuals were ejected from the dune buggy. One person was found unconscious at the scene and was later pronounced deceased after the coroner was called. The second victim sustained a head laceration and was evaluated by EMS on-site.

First responders conducted a thorough search of the surrounding woods to confirm the status and location of both individuals. EMS units that were initially en route were canceled after the full extent of the situation was confirmed. Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim lost in this incident. We also wish the surviving individual a safe and complete recovery.

Off-Road Vehicle Accidents in Pennsylvania

While off-road vehicles like dune buggies can offer recreation and adventure, they also pose significant safety risks—especially when operated in wooded or uneven terrain. Sunday’s fatal crash in Portland Boro reflects the harsh reality that off-road incidents can be just as deadly as those that occur on public roads.

Ejections from recreational vehicles are particularly dangerous, often resulting from rollovers or sudden impacts. Without the structural protections found in standard automobiles, riders face increased vulnerability to trauma. In this case, the fatality and injury underscore the importance of proper safety equipment, such as harnesses and helmets, when operating or riding in off-road vehicles.

Pennsylvania emergency responders are trained to handle such high-risk situations, but outcomes can still be tragic when crashes occur in remote or wooded areas. Delays in locating victims or reaching the scene can reduce critical response time.
