Portland, CT (January 28, 2026) – A major two-vehicle head-on collision in the 1600 block of Portland Cobalt Road on Wednesday afternoon left multiple people injured, including one person who was ejected from a vehicle and flown by Life Star helicopter to Hartford Hospital.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies rushed to the scene of the crash, which occurred near the area of Middle Haddam and Cobalt Center. Upon arrival, crews found significant damage to both vehicles and confirmed that one occupant had been ejected due to the impact. Life Star medical helicopter crew number one was activated and accepted the call, with the landing zone secured nearby at the Saint Clements Castle parking lot.
The patient requiring air transport was flown to Hartford Hospital in critical condition. Additional injured individuals were transported by Hunters Ambulance to Middlesex Hospital and Hartford Hospital. The severity of their injuries has not been publicly disclosed, but the scene was described as serious and complex.
Authorities quickly shut down Portland Cobalt Road in both directions to allow for emergency operations and to begin an accident reconstruction investigation. The road closure remains in effect and is expected to last for an extended period. Officials are urging drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes while the investigation continues.
