What Actually Cuts Down Car-Train Crashes at Crossings
Engineering changes tend to do more than warnings alone. Crossings with gates, flashing lights timed well ahead of an approaching train, and clear sightlines cut the odds that a driver misjudges a train's speed or distance. Medians that physically block cars from driving around lowered gates have also proven effective in places that have installed them.
Behavior still matters as much as infrastructure. Drivers who are fatigued, distracted, or impaired are slower to register warning signals and slower to brake or stop clear of the tracks. A flashing light only works if the person behind the wheel is paying attention to it in the first place, which is why crossings near schedules, long commutes, or early morning routes see repeat problems even with equipment functioning normally.
According to the Federal Railroad Administration, highway-rail grade-crossing incidents resulted in 1,385 fatalities from 2017 through 2023. Cities that have paired signal upgrades with enforcement and public education at known problem crossings have generally seen those numbers move in the right direction over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most traffic accidents happen?
Intersections account for a large share of crashes, including collisions involving trains, because they combine crossing traffic, turning movements, and timed signals in one place.
What can drivers do to lower their crash risk?
Slowing down near crossings and intersections, avoiding distractions, and never trying to beat a signal or gate are among the most reliable habits for avoiding a serious collision.
What injuries are common in vehicle-train crashes?
Because trains carry far more mass and force than a car, occupants often suffer injuries from intrusion into the vehicle cabin, including fractures, head injuries, and internal injuries, even at lower train speeds.
What to Do After a Train Crash in Portland, OR
If you're involved in a crash with a train, you should get checked by a medical provider even if injuries seem minor at first, since impact injuries aren't always obvious right away. It's also worth requesting a copy of the official incident report once it's available, since that document can matter later for insurance or medical follow-up. If you witnessed the crash, local police and transit agencies like TriMet often want witness accounts to help determine what happened at the crossing.
