Frequently Asked Questions
Does a vehicle's speed matter for a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Yes. Research on vehicle-pedestrian crashes consistently shows that lower speeds give pedestrians a much better chance of survival and reduce the severity of injuries, since the force of impact rises sharply as speed increases.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
A large share occur at or near intersections and crosswalks, where vehicles turning or crossing paths with pedestrians create conflict points, though crashes also happen midblock when visibility is limited.
Are pedestrian crashes more likely after dark?
Low-light conditions make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians in time to stop, so crashes involving pedestrians happen more often during evening and nighttime hours than in daylight.
What should someone do after being hit by a vehicle?
Anyone involved should seek medical evaluation right away, even if injuries seem minor at first, since some injuries from pedestrian crashes aren't immediately obvious. It's also important to get the names of any officers or witnesses on scene and request a copy of the police report once available.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Portland, OR
Anyone caught up in a pedestrian crash should get checked by a medical provider as soon as possible, since adrenaline can mask pain from internal injuries or fractures. Collect contact information for any witnesses nearby, and if you're physically able, take photos of the scene before conditions change. Ask responding officers how to obtain the official report once it's filed. If a transit vehicle or commercial driver is involved, it also helps to note the bus or vehicle number and route. Follow up with your own doctor in the days after, even if emergency room staff clear you, since some injuries take time to show symptoms.
