Rehoboth Beach, DE (June 22, 2026) – A 66-year-old woman from Potomac, Maryland, died after an e-bike crash involving a pickup truck Saturday morning on Coastal Hwy in Rehoboth Beach.

According to the Delaware State Police, the collision occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on June 20, north of Savages Ditch Rd. Investigators said a GMC Sierra 2500 was traveling south in the left lane of Coastal Hwy while the woman was riding an e-bike in the designated bicycle lane along the same roadway.

The preliminary investigation found that the e-bike entered the southbound travel lanes and moved into the path of the pickup truck for reasons that remain under review. The truck then struck the rider.

The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she died; her identity has not been released pending notification of family members. The driver of the GMC, a 64-year-old man from Perryville, Maryland, was not hurt.

Traffic on Coastal Hwy was affected for about two hours while crews worked at the roadway. Investigators continue examining the circumstances that led to the crash.

Our sincere condolences go out to the woman’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Why Bicycle Lane Departures Create Risks?

Bicycle lanes are designed to provide a dedicated space for cyclists and e-bike riders traveling alongside vehicle traffic. When a rider leaves a designated lane and enters active travel lanes, the risk of a severe collision can increase significantly, particularly on high-speed roadways where drivers have limited time to react.

E-bikes have become increasingly common in communities across the country. While they offer convenient transportation, riders must remain aware of surrounding traffic and roadway conditions. Visibility, roadway design, and driver awareness can all influence safety outcomes when bicycles and motor vehicles share the same corridor.

After a serious roadway collision involving a bicycle or e-bike, investigators review vehicle movements, lane positions, witness statements, and physical evidence. These details can help establish how the sequence of events unfolded and provide a clearer understanding of the factors involved.
