Frequently Asked Questions
How does a vehicle's speed affect a pedestrian's chance of surviving a crash?
Higher speeds raise both the force of impact and the distance a pedestrian is thrown, which lowers survival odds and worsens injuries even in otherwise similar collisions.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
Many occur outside marked crosswalks or intersections, including stretches of roadway where drivers may not expect someone on foot, similar to the area involved in this crash.
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night?
Reduced visibility after dark makes it harder for drivers to see people walking, and a large share of pedestrian deaths nationally occur at night or in low-light conditions.
What should a pedestrian do immediately after being hit by a vehicle?
If possible, call 911, stay where it is safe, avoid moving an injured person, and wait for police and medical responders to arrive and document the scene.
