E-Bike Safety for Young Riders in New Jersey: What Families Should Know
E-bikes have grown in popularity among young riders across New Jersey, but they present different risks than traditional bicycles. They can reach higher speeds with little physical effort, which can catch new riders off guard, especially those who are not yet experienced cyclists. At those speeds, collisions with cars at intersections can have far more serious consequences than a typical bike accident.
New Jersey has taken steps to address these risks through upcoming statewide regulations set to take effect in July 2026. The new rules will set a minimum riding age of 15, require a road test and either a driver’s or e-bike license, mandate insurance and registration, and require all riders to wear helmets regardless of age. These measures reflect a growing recognition across the state that e-bikes need to be treated with the same seriousness as motor vehicles, particularly where younger riders are concerned.
