PROVIDENCE FORGE, New Kent County, Va., Oct. 24, 2026 – Three people were hospitalized on Thursday morning, October 22, after a two-vehicle crash shut down all eastbound lanes of Interstate 64 in New Kent County.

The crash happened around 10:58 a.m. near mile marker 209. Troopers said a Nissan Altima ran off the left side of the interstate, struck a crash attenuator and spun back into traffic, where it collided with a Ford F-350.

All three people hurt in the crash were taken to an area hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The interstate's eastbound lanes were closed for a period while crews worked the scene.

In a separate incident, an ambulance responding to the crash was involved in its own minor collision while en route. Details on that second crash, including whether anyone was hurt, have not been released.

The crash on I-64 remains under investigation. State police have not released the names of those involved or said what led the Altima to leave the roadway.

We wish the injured a complete and speedy recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can drivers do to lower their chances of a crash on the interstate?

Keeping a safe following distance, staying alert for vehicles that drift or spin out, and slowing down in work zones or near barriers can help drivers react in time when another vehicle loses control nearby.

What injuries commonly result from crashes like this one?

Collisions involving a spinout and a secondary impact usually cause whiplash, broken bones, and head or chest injuries from the force of multiple impacts, even when injuries are not life-threatening.

What usually causes a vehicle to run off the road like this?

Common factors include distracted driving, speeding, fatigue, and loss of control on uneven pavement or in bad weather, though the cause of any specific crash is determined by investigators.

Does speed make a difference in how serious a crash turns out to be?

Yes. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force of impact, which tends to make injuries and vehicle damage more severe.
