Pueblo, CO (February 25, 2026) – Five people lost their lives after a series of crashes involving more than 30 vehicles along Interstate 25 near Pueblo on Tuesday, February 17.
The incidents happened around 10 a.m. when strong winds pushed large amounts of dust across the roadway, creating near-zero visibility. Officials said drivers were unable to see ahead as a sudden “brownout” swept across the highway. Multiple collisions followed, including crashes involving several semi-trucks.
Authorities first reported four fatalities and dozens of injuries. One of the injured has recently lost their life at a hospital, raising the death toll to five. Emergency units responded to both sides of the interstate, though the southbound crashes were limited to property damage.
Injuries ranged from minor to severe, and several people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The exact number of injured victims has not been fully confirmed.
One vehicle involved was hauling livestock, including sheep and a goat. Some animals were trapped in the wreckage, while others wandered from the damaged trailer before being recovered.
Weather reports indicated wind gusts reached up to 70 mph in the area. The blowing dust is believed to have played a major role in the chain-reaction crashes.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.
How Dust Storm Conditions Can Impact Drivers in Colorado
Sudden dust storms can create dangerous driving conditions across parts of Colorado, especially in dry and windy weather. Strong gusts can lift loose soil into the air, quickly reducing visibility on highways. Drivers may go from clear conditions to near-total darkness within seconds.
When visibility drops, reaction times become shorter, and stopping distances increase. Vehicles traveling at highway speeds may not have enough time to slow down safely. This can lead to chain-reaction crashes involving multiple cars and large trucks.
Roadways like Interstate 25 near Pueblo are especially exposed to open land, where blowing dust is more likely. In these conditions, drivers are often advised to reduce speed, use headlights, and avoid sudden stops to lower the risk of collisions.
