Frequently Asked Questions
How can drivers lower the chance of hitting someone on foot?
Slowing down near crosswalks, intersections, and residential streets, scanning both sides of the road before proceeding, and avoiding distractions like phones give drivers more time to spot and react to pedestrians.
What injuries are common when a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle?
Pedestrians often suffer broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal trauma, since they have no protection from the impact the way vehicle occupants do.
What usually causes pedestrian crashes?
Common factors include drivers failing to yield, distracted driving, poor visibility at night, and pedestrians crossing outside marked crosswalks.
Does speed matter in pedestrian crash outcomes?
Yes. Lower vehicle speeds give drivers more time to stop and reduce the force of impact, which generally means a better chance of survival and less severe injury for the person struck.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Quincy, MA
If you're involved in or witnessing a pedestrian crash, you should call 911 immediately so injuries can be treated and the scene secured. Even if injuries seem minor at first, a medical evaluation is important, since some injuries, particularly head and internal injuries, are not obvious right away. Getting the names of witnesses and taking photos of the scene, if it's safe to do so, can help later on. Cooperating with police and requesting a copy of the official report once it's available are also useful steps for anyone affected by the crash.
