QUITMAN, Brooks County, Ga., Oct. 6, 2026 — One person suffered minor injuries after a Brooks County school bus and a car crashed Monday morning, October 5, at the intersection of Troupeville Road and Eagle Run Drive.
A trooper was dispatched at 6:37 a.m. to investigate the crash, according to a preliminary report from the Georgia State Patrol. The report found that school bus #22-25 was turning left from Eagle Run Drive onto Troupeville Road when it pulled into the path of a Nissan Murano traveling south on Troupeville Road. The bus reportedly failed to yield, and the two vehicles collided in the southbound lane.
No injuries were reported among those on board the bus. The driver of the Murano was taken to South Georgia Medical Center with injuries described as minor.
The crash remains under investigation, and further findings from the Georgia State Patrol have not been released.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.
Where School Bus Crashes Most Often Happen
School bus crashes tend to cluster at the kinds of intersections where turning movements meet through traffic, especially on two-lane rural roads without signals. A bus pulling out from a side street or driveway onto a higher-speed road has to judge gaps in traffic with a long, slow-accelerating vehicle, and that judgment call is where many of these crashes begin.
Undivided highways carry extra risk because there's no buffer between opposing lanes and no dedicated turn signal to control conflicting movements. Drivers approaching from either direction have only sight lines and timing to rely on, and a misjudged turn by either party can put vehicles into the same lane within seconds.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 971 fatal school-transportation-related traffic crashes occurred from 2014 through 2023. Many of these incidents happen at ordinary intersections during routine pickup and drop-off hours, not on highways or in unusual conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes crashes between school buses and other vehicles?
Common factors include failure to yield at turns or intersections, misjudged gaps in traffic, and limited visibility at unsignalled crossings.
How does speed affect the outcome of a bus-involved crash?
Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force of impact, which raises the likelihood of injury even in otherwise minor-looking collisions.
Why is distracted driving a particular concern near school buses?
Buses make frequent stops and turns, so a driver who is not fully attentive may miss warning signals, flashing lights, or a bus beginning to turn or stop.
Do weather or road conditions play a role in these crashes?
Wet pavement, glare, or poor lighting can make it harder for drivers to judge distance and timing at intersections, which are already high-risk points for turning vehicles.
