Raleigh, NC (March 8, 2026) – A man died on Wednesday afternoon, March 4, following a crash involving a vehicle and a moped on Hammond Road in Raleigh.
According to the Raleigh Police Department, officers responded to the crash at approximately 2:48 p.m. after receiving reports of a collision between a car and a moped.
Investigators said Gabriela Ortiz, 35, was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee northbound on Hammond Road in the outside lane when she approached a moped being operated by Michael Ray Capers, 52.
The police said Ortiz failed to reduce speed and struck the rear of the moped. The impact ejected Capers from the vehicle, and he was subsequently run over. He was later pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.
Authorities reported that Ortiz remained at the scene following the crash, and officers found no evidence of impairment. She has been cited for misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failure to reduce speed, and no operator’s license.
The crash remains under investigation by the Raleigh Police Department.
We extend our condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.
Risks of Rear-End Collisions Involving Mopeds
Mopeds and scooters are particularly vulnerable in rear-end collisions because they lack the structural protection found in passenger vehicles. Even relatively low-speed impacts can eject riders and lead to severe or fatal injuries.
Maintaining a safe following distance and reducing speed in traffic are critical steps drivers must take to prevent crashes with smaller vehicles. Awareness of motorcycles, mopeds, and bicycles on the roadway can help reduce the risk of deadly collisions.
