Encinitas, CA (July 24, 2026) — Injuries were reported after a six-vehicle rear-end collision on southbound I-5 near La Costa on Thursday, July 23.

California Highway Patrol dispatch records show the crash was reported around 7 a.m. A blue sedan reportedly rear-ended a white Honda Civic Sport, and several other vehicles were stopped in or near the high-occupancy vehicle lane.

The incident ultimately involved six vehicles, including a blue Toyota Prius, a white Honda Civic, and a red vehicle. All lanes were temporarily blocked while responders worked to move the vehicles to the right shoulder.

Emergency personnel and towing services were requested.

Authorities continue investigating the cause of the crash. We wish those injured a speedy recovery.

Where the Crash Happened: Southbound I-5 Near La Costa

Southbound I-5 through the Encinitas area carries regional traffic along the North County coastal corridor. The roadway includes several travel lanes and a high-occupancy vehicle lane, with vehicles frequently adjusting speed and position near local access points.

When stopped or damaged vehicles occupy the HOV lane, responders must work across fast-moving traffic to reach the scene and relocate the vehicles. A full lane blockage can also cause traffic to slow abruptly well before the original crash location.

What We Know

  • The crash was reported around 7 a.m. on Thursday.
  • Six vehicles were ultimately listed as involved.
  • The initial collision was reported as a rear-end crash.
  • A blue sedan and a white Honda Civic Sport were among the vehicles involved.
  • A blue Toyota Prius and a red vehicle were also identified.
  • The HOV lane was blocked, and all lanes were later reported blocked.
  • Emergency responders and towing services were requested.

How a Rear-End Crash Can Develop Into a Multi-Vehicle Collision

On an interstate, a single rear-end impact can leave nearby drivers with little time or space to avoid further contact. Vehicles traveling close together may brake suddenly, change lanes, or become trapped behind damaged vehicles.

The six-vehicle involvement on southbound I-5 suggests investigators will need to separate the initial impact from any later contacts. Damage patterns across the vehicles can help show whether the crash developed as a chain reaction or through several distinct impacts.

How This Crash Is Investigated

CHP investigators may compare damage to each of the six vehicles to determine the order in which the impacts occurred. They may also document debris, tire marks, lane positions, and where each vehicle stopped after the crash.

Statements from the drivers and witnesses can be compared with the physical evidence. Because the collision affected both the HOV lane and other travel lanes, investigators may also examine whether sudden braking or lane movements contributed to the sequence.

What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Collision

People involved in a multi-vehicle crash should preserve photographs, towing records, repair estimates, medical documents, and insurance correspondence. Keeping clear records can be especially important when several drivers and vehicles are involved in the same sequence.

For crashes investigated by the California Highway Patrol, reports are available through the CHP Crash Portal at crashes.chp.ca.gov or through a CHP 190 request submitted by mail or in person. The collision report form is CHP 555, while CHP 190 is the request form.

The online portal fee is $22. Mail and in-person requests cost $10 per 25 pages through CHP. A report becomes available after the investigating officer files it, and the portal shows when it is ready.

Under Vehicle Code § 20012, parties of interest may include drivers, passengers, vehicle or property owners, parents or guardians, and legal or insurance representatives. California collision reports are not public records and remain restricted to eligible parties, with no fixed public-release window.
