Jacksonville, FL (May 23, 2026) – A 50-year-old Jacksonville man lost his life in a two-vehicle wreck early on Friday at the intersection of 103rd St and the Interstate 295 northbound entrance ramp.
According to troopers, the man was driving a sport utility vehicle westbound on 103rd St around 3:35 a.m. when he went through a red light and struck another SUV. The second vehicle, driven by an 18-year-old Jacksonville man, was turning left onto the I-295 northbound ramp at the time.
Investigators said the westbound SUV rotated and overturned after the collision. The 50-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the roadway site. The younger driver was not hurt.
Officials stated the man who died was not wearing a seat belt. His family has been notified, and no additional information about the fatal crash was immediately released. Detectives are continuing to examine the factors that led to the overnight accident.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the loved ones mourning this loss.
How Red-Light Violations Increase the Risk of Serious Intersection Collisions
Intersections are among the most dangerous parts of any roadway because traffic moves in multiple directions at once. Drivers rely on traffic signals to manage turns, crossings, and lane movement safely. When a vehicle enters against a red light, other drivers usually have little time to react.
High-speed side-angle collisions can lead to rollovers, especially for larger vehicles such as SUVs. Safety restraints also help reduce the chance of fatal harm during overturns or sudden vehicle rotation. Even at lower speeds, occupants who are not buckled in may face a greater risk of being thrown against the inside of the vehicle.
Nighttime driving can create additional hazards due to lower visibility and fatigue. Reduced traffic during overnight hours may also lead some drivers to misjudge intersections or travel faster than usual.
