What Should Rural Property Owners Know About Fire Safety?
Rural properties can present unique fire-safety challenges because buildings may be separated by long distances and emergency crews may have farther to travel. Multiple structures, vehicles, fuel sources, and stored equipment can also allow a fire to spread quickly from one area to another. Keeping access routes clear can help emergency vehicles reach a property more easily when a fire occurs.
Explosions can result from several hazards, including damaged electrical equipment, fuel vapors, propane, or other combustible materials. Flammable liquids and gases should be stored in appropriate containers and kept away from ignition sources whenever possible. Residents should also avoid entering a burning structure or approaching areas where an explosion or hazardous-material release may have occurred.
Heat and smoke can create serious dangers for both residents and responders. Anyone who notices a fire should move to a safe location rather than attempting to retrieve belongings or confront the flames. Smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, and a household evacuation plan can provide important layers of protection before professional help arrives.
