RICHMOND HILL, Bryan County, Ga., Oct. 7, 2026 — A tractor-trailer crash with injuries shut down lanes of northbound Interstate 95 near Richmond Hill on Tuesday afternoon, October 6, according to Richmond Hill police. The number of people hurt, and their conditions, had not been released.

The crash happened on northbound I-95 near Exit 87 at U.S. Highway 17. Emergency crews, fire trucks, and tow trucks responded to the scene and worked to clear the tractor-trailer from the roadway, temporarily stopping traffic.

The closure caused a long backup on northbound I-95, with congestion stretching onto U.S. 17 for drivers heading toward the interstate. Authorities asked motorists to avoid the area and use alternate routes while the scene was cleared.

The crash remains under investigation. No cause has been released.

Separately, drivers farther south encountered delays due to another crash on northbound I-95 near U.S. Highway 84 in the Midway area. That incident does not appear to be connected to the Richmond Hill crash.

We hope everyone who was hurt makes a full and speedy recovery.

Why Tractor-Trailer Crashes on Highways Like I-95 Cause Serious Damage

A loaded tractor-trailer can weigh 20 to 30 times as much as a passenger car. When a large truck and a smaller vehicle collide, especially at highway speed, the difference in weight and closing speed determines most of what happens next. The heavier vehicle keeps moving while the lighter one absorbs most of the force, which is why damage in truck-involved crashes tends to fall harder on the smaller vehicle's occupants.

Modern cars are built with crumple zones at the front and rear, meant to collapse and absorb energy in a crash, while the passenger cabin is reinforced to stay intact. That design works best when the colliding vehicles are similar in size. A tractor-trailer's height and frame can override those crumple zones entirely, striking a car above or below where its structure is strongest. Seat belts and airbags still matter in these crashes. They cannot change the weight gap between vehicles, but they keep occupants positioned where the car's safety cage and restraint system are designed to protect them, rather than being thrown forward or sideways on impact.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 6,138,359 police-reported traffic crashes occurred in 2023. Highway crashes involving large trucks account for a small share of that total, but the weight and height mismatch is a major reason they tend to produce more severe outcomes than crashes between two passenger vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can drivers do to lower their risk around large trucks?

Keeping distance from tractor-trailers, avoiding their blind spots, and never cutting in front of a truck sharply all reduce the chance of a serious collision, since trucks take much longer to stop or react.

What injuries are most common in car accidents?

Whiplash, broken bones, head and neck injuries, and internal injuries are common, with severity generally tied to crash speed and the size difference between vehicles involved.

What usually causes highway crashes like this one?

Common factors include following too closely, distracted driving, sudden lane changes, and speed differences between vehicles, though a specific cause is not confirmed until investigators complete their review.

Does speed change how severe a crash is?

Yes. Higher speeds mean more energy is absorbed in a collision, increasing the risk of serious injury even in vehicles with modern safety features.
