Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?
Many occur at intersections, crosswalks, or along busy roadways where vehicles are turning or where lighting and visibility are limited, though they can happen anywhere a person on foot or using mobility equipment shares space with traffic.
Are pedestrian accidents more common at night?
Reduced visibility after dark raises the risk for pedestrians, especially on roads without good street lighting or marked crossings, which is why many fatal and serious pedestrian crashes happen at night.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
If possible, call 911 right away, stay at the scene, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some injuries aren't obvious right after an impact. Try to note details about the vehicle and any witnesses.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in a marked or unmarked crosswalk, but drivers are still required to exercise caution and yield at all intersections, whether or not a crosswalk is painted on the road.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Richmond, VA
Anyone who witnesses a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian should call 911 immediately and try to note the vehicle's direction, color, and any identifying features. If you were the one struck, get checked by medical personnel even if you feel capable of walking away, since adrenaline can mask pain from fractures or internal injuries. Ask responding officers for a copy of the police report number, and if you use a wheelchair or other mobility device that was damaged or lost in the crash, document its condition and location as soon as it's safe to do so. Keep a record of any treatment you receive in the days afterward, since some injuries only become apparent once swelling or stiffness sets in.
