Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer head trauma, spinal injuries, broken bones and internal injuries. Because there is no structure to absorb the impact, even lower-speed collisions can cause serious harm.
What are the most common causes of pedestrian accidents?
Driver inattention, poor visibility at night, speeding and pedestrians walking in roadways not meant for foot traffic, such as interstates, are frequent factors in these crashes.
How does vehicle speed affect a pedestrian's chance of survival?
Survival rates drop sharply as vehicle speed increases. Pedestrians struck at higher highway speeds face a much greater risk of fatal injury than those hit in slow-moving traffic.
Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?
Many occur at intersections or roadway crossings, but pedestrians walking along highways or interstate shoulders face particular danger due to high speeds and limited reaction time for drivers.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Ridgeland, South Carolina
If you witness or are involved in a pedestrian crash, call 911 immediately and stay at the scene until help arrives. Avoid moving an injured person unless there is an immediate danger, such as oncoming traffic. If you're a driver involved in the crash, remain calm, provide any requested information to responding officers, and cooperate fully with the investigation. Anyone affected, whether directly involved or a witness, should consider seeking a medical evaluation even if injuries aren't immediately apparent, since shock can mask pain. Keep a copy of the police report for your records once it becomes available.
