Riley County, KS (January 5, 2026) – A two-vehicle collision along westbound I-70 left a Colorado woman seriously injured early on Sunday morning. The crash occurred at approximately 6:05 a.m. on January 4, just west of Tallgrass Rd in Riley County, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Authorities reported that a 2020 Subaru Legacy collided with the rear of a 2023 Peterbilt truck and trailer as the truck was pulling onto the shoulder of the interstate. After the impact, the Subaru veered into the median, resulting in injuries to one of the vehicle’s occupants.
A 24-year-old female passenger suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. The driver of the Subaru, a 26-year-old male, and a 5-year-old child in the vehicle were both reportedly uninjured. All occupants of the Subaru were wearing safety restraints at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Peterbilt, a 61-year-old male from Texas, was also uninjured and was properly restrained. The Kansas Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the incident.
Our thoughts are with the injured passenger as she receives care and begins the path to recovery.
Rear-End Truck Collisions on Kansas Highways
Crashes involving passenger vehicles and large trucks are often among the most dangerous on interstates like I-70. The size and weight of commercial vehicles dramatically increase the force of impact, especially during rear-end collisions like the one that occurred near Tallgrass Rd.
In this case, the crash happened as the truck was pulling onto the shoulder, a scenario that often requires drivers behind to react quickly and with precision. Limited visibility in early morning hours can reduce reaction time, and even a momentary distraction can lead to high-impact consequences.
Despite all occupants in the Subaru being properly restrained, one passenger still suffered serious injuries, a reminder of how severe highway crashes can be, even with safety precautions in place. The involvement of a child further highlights the importance of proper restraint use and the unpredictability of injury outcomes in crashes involving heavy trucks.
Recovery after a serious injury often includes medical treatment, rehabilitation, emotional stress, and uncertainty about next steps. For families traveling from out of state, like the individuals in this case, logistical challenges can add even more difficulty.
