Frequently Asked Questions
What can drivers do to avoid crashes like this one?
Leaving extra following distance, slowing down near ramps and merge points, and staying alert for stopped or slow traffic ahead can help drivers react in time, especially overnight when visibility is lower.
What injuries are common in two-vehicle collisions like this?
Whiplash, bruising, and soft-tissue injuries are common even in lower-speed crashes, while higher-speed impacts can cause broken bones or head injuries. Anyone involved should be checked by a medical provider even if they feel fine at the scene.
What usually causes crashes at highway off-ramps?
Sudden braking, following too closely, and reduced visibility in low-light conditions are frequent factors in off-ramp collisions, though the specific cause of this crash has not been confirmed.
Does speed make a difference in how serious a crash is?
Yes. Higher speeds mean more force at impact and less time to react, which generally leads to more serious injuries and vehicle damage compared to lower-speed collisions.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Riverside, CA
If you're involved in a crash on a freeway or off-ramp, try to move to a safe location if your vehicle is drivable and turn on hazard lights to warn oncoming traffic. Check yourself and any passengers for injuries, and call 911 even if injuries seem minor, since some symptoms take hours to appear. Exchange information with the other driver and, if possible, take photos of the vehicles and surrounding area. Follow up with a doctor in the days after the crash, and keep records of any medical visits or vehicle repair estimates for your own files.
