Ingham Co., MI (May 28, 2026) – Two Michigan Department of Transportation workers died Tuesday afternoon, May 26, after an SUV struck them during roadwork on U.S. Highway 127 in Ingham County.
The crash happened just after 1:15 p.m. on U.S. 127 near Holt Road. Authorities said the workers were performing roadwork when the SUV hit them.
The workers were identified as 51-year-old Bruce Wagner and 49-year-old Steve Spenle. Both died from their injuries. A third worker was also hurt but did not suffer serious injuries, according to the report.
The SUV driver, a 24-year-old man, was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. Investigators said preliminary information suggests speed may have been a factor in the crash.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including local fire and police departments.
The collision remains under investigation by authorities. We extend our sincere condolences to the families, friends, and coworkers of both victims.
Why Work Zone Accidents Can Be Deadly
Work zone accidents can be especially dangerous because road crews often work close to moving traffic. Even when warning signs, cones, or lane controls are in place, workers may have limited protection if a vehicle leaves its lane or enters the work area.
Highway speeds can make these crashes severe. Drivers may have little time to react to lane shifts, reduced shoulders, stopped equipment, or workers near the roadway. Investigators may review speed, lane position, traffic control setup, driver actions, road conditions, and witness statements to understand how the collision happened and how future work zone risks may be reduced.
