Yolo County, CA (September 6, 2026) – A two-vehicle collision involving two pickups was reported on southbound Interstate 5 just south of County Road 102 at about 9:21 a.m. on Friday, September 4.
Initial California Highway Patrol entries said one pickup was towing another vehicle when control was lost. The towing setup reportedly jackknifed, and one vehicle rolled three times. Both pickups overturned, with one coming to rest on its side near the right shoulder and embankment.
One person was reported to be possibly injured, and the call was later classified as involving minor injuries. Tow trucks were requested for both vehicles.
The circumstances remain under review. We hope the injured person makes a swift and full recovery.
Why Can Towing Instability Lead to a Rollover?
A vehicle pulling another vehicle must manage the additional weight and movement of the vehicle behind it. Sudden steering, braking, or shifting weight can cause the towed load to move sideways, making the towing vehicle harder to control.
Jackknifing occurs when the tow vehicle and what it is pulling move sharply out of alignment. Once that movement begins, tires may lose traction, and the combined setup can rotate across the roadway or shoulder.
Rollover risk can increase if a vehicle reaches uneven ground, an embankment, or a soft shoulder while moving sideways. Speed, weight distribution, hitch setup, steering input, and road surface all affect stability. Proper spacing and smooth changes in speed or direction can reduce abrupt forces while towing.
