Why Entrapment Can Happen During Rollover Crashes
Rollover crashes can leave people trapped inside vehicles when doors become jammed or the roof structure shifts during the rollover. In multi-vehicle collisions, severe damage or the final resting position of a vehicle may also make it difficult for occupants to exit safely without assistance.
Roads with higher travel speeds, intersections, and sudden lane changes can all increase the risk of rollover crashes. Larger vehicles and SUVs are generally more likely to overturn because of their higher center of gravity. After these types of roadway collisions, investigators often review vehicle movement, point of contact, and road conditions to better determine how the rollover began and why the vehicles came to rest where they did.
