RONAN, Lake County, Mont., Oct. 8, 2026 — A driver suffered serious injuries on Tuesday morning, October 6, in a T-bone crash at the intersection of Baptiste Rd and Hwy 93 near Ronan. The Montana Highway Patrol is investigating.
The crash happened just after 8 a.m. Troopers said a dump truck pulled onto the highway when it was not safe to do so, putting it into the path of a southbound Ford Fusion. The two vehicles collided in a T-bone pattern at the intersection.
The driver of the Ford Fusion was taken to a hospital with serious back injuries. No information on the dump truck driver's condition has been released.
The crash remains under investigation. MHP has not released further details on citations or contributing factors.
We wish the injured a complete and speedy recovery.
What Loading and Weight Distribution Mean for Truck Control
Dump trucks and other heavy work vehicles handle differently from passenger cars, and much of that difference comes down to what they're carrying and how they carry it. A loaded dump bed sits high and can shift weight unevenly if the load is not properly spread or secured, which changes how the truck brakes, turns, and responds when a driver tries to pull into traffic or stop suddenly. An empty bed changes the equation again, often reducing traction on the rear axle.
That weight also affects how long it takes a truck to clear an intersection once it starts moving. A loaded truck accelerates more slowly than a car, so a gap that looks safe can close faster than the driver expects. Keeping cargo properly distributed and within rated limits is one of the more overlooked pieces of intersection safety for heavy vehicles.
Road design plays a role, too. Rural highway crossings like the one near Ronan often rely on sightlines and driver judgment rather than signals. Wider medians, turn lanes, rumble strips, and improved lighting at rural intersections have all been shown to help drivers of all vehicle types judge gaps more accurately before entering a highway.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 76 percent of fatal crashes involving large trucks occurred on weekdays in 2023.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an underride crash?
An underride crash occurs when a smaller vehicle slides partly or fully beneath a truck's trailer or body during a collision, often increasing the severity of injuries because the impact reaches the passenger compartment.
What commonly causes large-truck accidents?
Common factors include misjudged gaps when entering traffic, driver fatigue, improper cargo loading, mechanical issues such as brake failure, and weather or visibility conditions.
How can drivers share the road safely with trucks?
Giving trucks extra following distance, avoiding blind spots near the cab and rear, and expecting slower acceleration from loaded trucks at intersections can reduce the chance of a collision.
Does driver fatigue contribute to truck crashes?
Yes. Long hours behind the wheel are a recognized factor in large-truck crashes, which is part of why federal rules limit the number of consecutive hours commercial drivers can operate.
What to Do After a T-Bone Crash in Ronan, MT
If you're involved in a T-bone crash, move to safety if possible and call 911 right away. Even injuries that seem minor at first, especially to the back or neck, can take hours to become apparent, so a medical evaluation soon after the crash is worth the time. Get the names and badge numbers of responding troopers or deputies and ask how to obtain the official crash report once it's released. Photograph the scene, vehicle positions, and any visible damage if you're able to safely do so, and keep records of medical visits and any time missed from work in the days that follow.
