Seat Pleasant, MD (July 29, 2026) – A three-vehicle wreck during Wednesday’s morning commute shut down westbound US-50 at Martin Luther King Jr. Highway in Prince George’s County, according to fire officials. The crash, involving a tractor-trailer and two sedans, was reported around 8:30 a.m.

One person was trapped inside the tractor-trailer, which briefly caught fire before crews extinguished it. That person was freed and taken to a hospital in critical condition, while a second person was evaluated at the scene. Hazmat crews responded after the crash caused an oil spill.

By 2 p.m., three right lanes had reopened, though the left lane and shoulder remained closed for cleanup. The cause remains under investigation. We hope the injured have a full recovery.

Why Do Rush-Hour Collisions Cause Long Delays?

A serious collision at the height of the morning commute affects far more drivers than the same disruption would during a quieter part of the day. Traffic volume is already at its peak, meaning even a single blocked lane can create backups stretching for miles within minutes.

Commuters have less flexibility to reroute during rush hour, since alternate roads are just as congested at that time. This can leave drivers with few good options besides waiting it out or taking a much longer detour.

Cleanup efforts also compete with a denser flow of traffic passing nearby, which can slow the work of clearing debris or restoring lanes safely. This combination of heavy traffic and a complicated cleanup means recovery takes considerably longer than the disruption itself, extending delays well past the point when the immediate danger has passed.
