Rutherford County, TN (January 12, 2026) – A tragic crash involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger car claimed the lives of two people Sunday morning along Interstate 840 in Rutherford County. The collision occurred shortly before 11 a.m. on January 11 near mile marker 47, close to the Highway 102 interchange, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
A preliminary report states that an Audi R8 was traveling eastbound on I-840 when the driver lost control. The vehicle crossed the grassy median and entered the westbound lanes, directly into the path of a westbound Freightliner Cascadia. The two vehicles collided violently, resulting in catastrophic damage to the Audi and fatal injuries to both occupants.
Medics and Hazmat crews responded swiftly to the scene. Despite their efforts, both the driver and passenger of the Audi were pronounced dead at the scene. They have been identified as Sonephet Khamsyvoravong, 48, and Kevin Kipping, 42, both Tennessee residents. The driver of the Freightliner was not injured in the crash.
Due to the severity of the collision and the aftermath, I-840 was completely shut down for an extended period. According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, a significant oil, diesel, and debris spill created hazardous conditions and prolonged the cleanup process. Hazmat teams worked to contain and remove the materials before the highway was fully reopened.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed that no charges were filed in connection with the incident, and the crash remains under active investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of Sonephet Khamsyvoravong and Kevin Kipping during this incredibly difficult time.
