Rye, NY (May 31, 2026) – A City of Rye police officer and a suspected impaired driver were hurt following a high-speed pursuit that ended near Boston Post Rd and the Interstate 95 on-ramp in Rye.

According to information released by New York State Police, the chain of events began around 1:59 a.m. on Sunday, May 31, when troopers were pursuing a vehicle on Interstate 684 South. The vehicle then traveled east on Interstate 287 before exiting at Exit 11 onto Boston Post Rd near Rye Country Day School.

Investigators said the vehicle came off the exit ramp at a high rate of speed and struck a City of Rye Police vehicle. After hitting the patrol unit, the driver continued through the intersection, entered the Interstate 95 on-ramp across from Boston Post Rd., and traveled roughly 100 yards before stopping against a Jersey barrier.

The police officer and the driver were both taken to Westchester Medical Center. The officer received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries and was later released. Emergency units removed the driver from the vehicle, and his medical status was not immediately disclosed. A small fire was reported in the driver’s vehicle and was extinguished.

New York State Police identified the driver as 29-year-old Jaime Elizandro Pacheco-Zamora of Port Chester. He was arrested and charged with DWI, vehicular assault, and reckless driving. Additional information about the collision had not been made public as of this report. Still, investigators are continuing to review the circumstances that led to the roadway encounter.

We hope those harmed in this incident make a full and speedy recovery.

What Happens After a Suspected Impaired-Driving Pursuit Ends in a Serious Roadway Crash?

When a suspected impaired-driving pursuit ends in a serious roadway crash, investigators typically gather evidence from several sources to determine exactly what occurred. This usually includes reviewing dash camera footage, roadway surveillance video, vehicle damage, and physical evidence left along the travel path.

Medical evaluations may also help document the extent of harm to those involved. In cases where criminal charges are filed, toxicology testing and observations made during the stop can become part of the review process. Investigators may also examine vehicle speed, braking patterns, and traffic conditions at the time.

Road closures are common after major crashes because crews need time to document evidence, remove damaged vehicles, and restore safe travel conditions. As additional findings become available, a clearer picture of the sequence of events can emerge.
