Why Pedestrian Crashes at Intersections Can Be Severe
Roads such as Norwood Avenue and Jessie Avenue often carry a steady flow of vehicles from several directions. When pedestrians cross at intersections or nearby roadways, they may encounter vehicles approaching from multiple lanes.
Collisions involving pedestrians can result in serious injuries because people on foot have little protection during an impact. Even at moderate speeds, the force of a vehicle striking a person can cause severe harm.
Urban intersections may also include turning vehicles, limited visibility at night, and nearby driveways or side streets. These factors can affect how quickly drivers notice pedestrians entering the roadway and how much time they have to slow down or stop.
