SAINT CLOUD, Benton County, Minn., Oct. 10, 2026 — Two drivers were taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening after a two-vehicle crash on Thursday morning, October 8, on eastbound Highway 23 near Edgemont Drive NE in Saint Cloud.

The Minnesota State Patrol said a Chevy Colorado was turning westbound onto Highway 23 from Edgemont Drive when it collided with a GMC Acadia traveling eastbound on the highway. The crash happened around 6:32 a.m. Roads were dry at the time.

The driver of the Chevy, identified as 60-year-old Bradley Allen Yde of St. Cloud, was taken to St. Cloud Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Intersection Crashes and What the Numbers Show

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 6,138,359 police-reported traffic crashes occurred in 2023. A large share of those crashes happen at or near intersections, where a vehicle turning across traffic has to judge the speed and distance of oncoming cars in a matter of seconds.

Left-turn and cross-traffic collisions like these remain one of the most common crash patterns reported each year, in part because they depend on a driver's split-second read of gaps in traffic that can be misjudged even on clear, dry roads. Visibility, vehicle speed, and the width of the roadway being crossed all factor into how commonly these crashes occur and how serious the resulting injuries are.

Highway corridors with higher posted speeds tend to produce more severe outcomes when a turning vehicle and through traffic meet, simply because there's less time to react and more energy involved in the collision. That pattern holds across the country, not just on any one stretch of road.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does speed affect the severity of a crash?

Higher speeds reduce the time a driver has to react and increase the force of impact, which generally means more serious injuries and vehicle damage even in otherwise similar collisions.

Why is distracted driving considered so risky at intersections?

Judging a safe gap in oncoming traffic requires full attention. Even a glance away from the road can cause a driver to misjudge speed or distance and turn into the path of another vehicle.

What should I do immediately after a car accident?

Move to a safe location if possible, check for injuries, call 911, and exchange information with the other driver. Photograph the scene and vehicle positions if you're able, and seek a medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor.
