Why Wrong-Way Crashes on Highways Are Often Severe
Wrong-way crashes on highways like I-80 are among the most dangerous types of collisions. Because vehicles are typically traveling at high speeds, head-on impacts can result in significant damage and serious injuries.
When a vehicle enters opposing lanes, other drivers may have little time to react. Secondary crashes can also occur, as seen when additional vehicles are unable to stop in time. High-speed roadways near landmarks such as the Great Saltair often carry steady traffic, increasing the risk of multi-vehicle involvement when a wrong-way driver is present.
In these cases, investigators commonly review roadway access points, signage, and traffic camera footage. Factors such as visibility, driver condition, and vehicle positioning are also examined to better understand how the crash occurred.
