SALTON CITY, Imperial County, Calif., Oct. 25, 2026 — One person was trapped in a vehicle after a three-vehicle crash Saturday morning, October 24, on southbound State Route 86 at Black Diamond Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The California Highway Patrol said a gray Toyota Camry and a black Volkswagen Jetta collided, and a gray Ford SUV was then reported involved as well. The crash blocked part of the roadway, and the agency logged the scene as a traffic hazard for passing drivers.
Dispatch records show at least one occupant was injured and trapped inside a vehicle, prompting a request for extrication help. Imperial County Sheriff's Office personnel and American Medical Response units responded to the scene along with the CHP.
A tow service was called in to clear all three vehicles from the roadway, with removal expected to take roughly 35 to 40 minutes, according to dispatch logs.
The extent of injuries and the cause of the crash have not been released and remain under investigation. We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does following distance matter so much in traffic?
Keeping enough space between vehicles gives drivers time to react if traffic ahead slows or stops suddenly, which can prevent one crash from triggering another.
Do crashes like this often lead to additional collisions nearby?
Yes. A blocked lane or stopped traffic near the crash scene can catch following drivers off guard, so secondary crashes are a real risk until the roadway is cleared.
Why are multi-vehicle crashes harder to investigate than single-car wrecks?
Investigators have to establish the order of impacts and each driver's speed and position, which takes more time when three or more vehicles and several witness accounts are involved.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Salton City, California
If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash, move to a safe spot away from traffic if you're able to, and call 911 right away. Even if you feel fine, get checked by medical personnel at the scene since injuries like whiplash or internal bruising aren't always obvious right after a crash. Exchange information with the other drivers involved and take photos of all vehicles and the roadway if it's safe to do so. Ask for a copy of the CHP incident report once it's available, and follow up with your own doctor in the days afterward if any pain or stiffness develops.
