SAN ANTONIO, Bexar County, Texas, Oct. 13, 2026 — A resident and a firefighter were taken to hospitals early on Tuesday, October 13, after a two-alarm fire broke out at a North Side apartment complex, according to the San Antonio Fire Department. The fire damaged eight units at the Sutton House Apartments complex.
Fire crews were called to the complex, in the 11700 block of Wall Street, at about 1:20 a.m., SAFD spokesperson Woody Woodward said. The fire reportedly started on a balcony and spread into the three-story building, eventually reaching vaulted ceilings in top-floor apartments.
Woodward said the extent of the burned ceiling space required what the department called an extended operation to confirm the fire was fully out. Additional crews were called in to help.
One resident was taken to a hospital as a precaution. A firefighter was also hospitalized after being struck in the helmet by falling debris. Neither person's condition has been released.
Apartment management and the American Red Cross were working Tuesday morning to find temporary housing for residents displaced by the fire. The cause remains under investigation.
We wish the injured a complete and speedy recovery.
How Fire Investigators Determine What Happened and Why It Takes Time
Fire investigators typically cannot enter damaged areas until the structure is confirmed safe and any hot spots are fully extinguished, which can take hours after the flames are out. Once a scene is cleared, investigators document burn patterns, char depth, and the behavior of smoke and heat to trace where a fire started and how it moved through a building.
Determining a cause often means ruling out alternatives one at a time, such as electrical faults, discarded smoking materials, cooking equipment, or outdoor ignition sources, before investigators settle on a finding. Lab testing of debris samples, when needed, can add weeks to that process. Fire marshals and insurance adjusters may also review the scene separately, which can further extend the timeline.
Agencies generally wait to release details about injured residents or firefighters until next of kin have been notified and privacy rules have been met. A final, publicly released report is often the last step in a process that starts with firefighters still working the scene.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the most common causes of apartment fires?
Cooking equipment, electrical issues, heating devices, and careless disposal of smoking materials are among the most frequent causes cited in multi-family fire investigations.
What should residents do if a fire breaks out in their building?
Leave immediately using stairwells, never elevators, alert neighbors if it's safe to do so, and call 911 from outside the building rather than waiting to gather belongings.
How do weather or building conditions affect how a fire spreads?
Wind can push flames and embers along exterior walls and balconies, while older construction or shared attic and ceiling spaces can allow fire to spread between units faster than it would in a single-family home.
