SAN ANTONIO, Bexar County, Texas, Oct. 10, 2026 — A 10-year-old child was hospitalized Friday night, October 9, after being struck by a vehicle in a library parking lot on the Northwest Side. The driver fled the scene and remained at large as of Friday night.

Officers were attempting to pull over a blue SUV near the Igo Branch Library, in the 13300 block of Kyle Seale Parkway, around 8:15 p.m., San Antonio police said. During the attempted stop, the driver reportedly struck the child in the parking lot before continuing on.

The child was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Officers later found the SUV abandoned, according to the report. The driver will face a charge of collision involving injury once located and arrested. The search for the driver was ongoing Friday night, and no further details on the circumstances of the traffic stop have been released.

Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

When Pedestrian Crashes Happen Most Often

Pedestrian crashes do not spread evenly across the clock or the calendar. Many cluster in the evening hours, after work and school let out but before full darkness settles in, when foot traffic in parking lots, near schools and around retail areas is heaviest. Drivers adjusting to lower light, combined with glare from headlights and streetlights, can make it harder to spot someone stepping off a curb or walking behind a parked car.

Weekday evenings carry their own mix of risk: commuters hurrying home, delivery and rideshare traffic, and people moving through parking lots loaded down with bags or supervising kids. Add in a police stop, a chase, or any sudden maneuver, and the margin for a driver to see and react to someone on foot shrinks fast.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 84 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred in urban areas in 2023. Dense commercial corridors, shopping centers, and library or school lots, the kind of places built for foot traffic as much as vehicle traffic, are exactly where drivers and pedestrians are most likely to cross paths without warning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?

Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer broken bones, head injuries, and internal injuries, even at relatively low speeds. Children and older adults are especially vulnerable because they're smaller or less able to brace for impact.

What are the most common causes of pedestrian accidents?

Driver inattention, failure to yield, speeding, and low visibility are frequent factors. Crashes involving a vehicle fleeing a traffic stop or pursuit add an unpredictable element that increases risk for anyone nearby.

How does vehicle speed affect pedestrian survival?

Survival odds drop sharply as vehicle speed increases. A pedestrian struck at a low speed in a parking lot has a far better chance of survival and lesser injury than one struck on a higher-speed roadway.

Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?

Most occur in urban and suburban settings, often in parking lots, near intersections, or along commercial corridors where vehicle and foot traffic overlap.

What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in San Antonio, TX

If you witness or are involved in a pedestrian crash, call 911 immediately so paramedics can evaluate the injured person, even if injuries seem minor at first. Some injuries, especially head and internal injuries, aren't obvious right away.

Stay at the scene if it's safe to do so, and try to get a description of the vehicle and driver if they leave, including a license plate if possible. Cooperate with responding officers and give an honest account of what you saw.

Afterward, follow up with a doctor even if the injured person declines an ambulance at the scene. Keep copies of any medical records and the police report for your own records.
