Frequently Asked Questions
Why does wearing a seat belt matter so much in a crash like this?
A seat belt keeps an occupant from being thrown inside or out of the vehicle when it loses control or strikes something fixed, like a pole. That reduces the chance of fatal injury in a high-speed impact.
What should a family do after a fatal crash like this one?
Families can request a copy of the official crash report from the investigating police department once it's completed, and can contact the department's records division with questions about the investigation's status.
How do police investigate a fatal single-vehicle crash?
Investigators typically document the scene, examine the vehicle and roadway for signs of speed or mechanical failure, and may review any available video or witness accounts before determining a cause.
How long does a fatal-crash investigation usually take?
Timelines vary, but a full report with a determined cause can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months, depending on the complexity of the case and whether toxicology results are involved.
