Frequently Asked Questions
Are pedestrian crashes more likely to happen at night?
Reduced visibility after dark makes it harder for drivers to spot people walking or riding scooters, so evening and nighttime hours do see more of these collisions than daylight hours.
What should someone do after being hit by a vehicle while walking or riding a scooter?
Get medical attention right away, even if injuries seem minor, since some injuries aren't obvious at first. Try to get the names of any witnesses and ask that a police report be filed documenting the crash.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks, but drivers and pedestrians both carry a responsibility to watch for each other, especially at intersections with heavy turning traffic.
What can drivers do to avoid hitting someone on foot or on a scooter?
Slowing down near intersections, scanning both the roadway and sidewalks before turning, and staying off phones while driving all give drivers more time to react to someone crossing or riding nearby.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in San Antonio, TX
Anyone involved in or affected by a pedestrian crash should prioritize medical care first, since injuries like internal bleeding or head trauma aren't always apparent right away. If you witnessed a collision, stay at the scene and offer a statement to responding officers, as witness accounts often help investigators piece together what happened. Keep track of medical records, photos of the scene, and any paperwork from police, since these details can matter later even if they don't seem important in the moment. For residents of San Antonio, following up with the police department on the status of a report can also help clarify what investigators eventually determine.
