Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes a pile-up involving several vehicles?
Chain-reaction crashes usually start when one driver brakes suddenly, changes lanes without enough space, or fails to notice slowing traffic ahead, leaving following vehicles unable to stop in time.
Why do these chain-reaction collisions happen so fast?
Once the lead vehicles collide, following traffic often has only a few seconds to react, especially at freeway speeds, which is why a single initial crash can quickly pull in additional cars.
What should I do if I come up on a crash blocking lanes on the highway?
Slow down well before reaching the scene, turn on hazard lights to warn traffic behind you, and move into an open lane if it's safe to do so instead of stopping in a travel lane.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in San Bernardino, CA
If you're involved in a crash with several other vehicles, start by checking yourself and passengers for injuries before stepping out, since standing in a live travel lane carries its own risk. Move to the shoulder if your vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so. Call 911 even for what seems like a minor fender bender, since injuries aren't always obvious right away. Exchange information with other drivers, note the vehicles involved, and if officers respond, get the report number for your records. Afterward, see a doctor for any lingering soreness or stiffness, as some injuries from a chain-reaction impact take a day or two to show up.
