SAN DIEGO, San Diego County, Calif., Oct. 28, 2026 — Five vehicles collided Tuesday afternoon, October 27, on the on-ramp connecting Aero Drive to southbound I-15 in San Diego, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was first reported as a three-vehicle collision involving a red Hyundai sedan, a gray Toyota Prius and a silver Subaru sedan blocking the right lane of the on-ramp, the California Highway Patrol said. The agency's log shows the incident grew to involve five vehicles total as units responded to the scene.
CHP units reported minor injuries in the crash and requested medics to evaluate those involved, and a tow truck was called to help clear the vehicles from the ramp.
Freeway Service Patrol crews assisted at the scene and later closed out their portion of the response. The CHP's internal classification for the incident shifted over the course of the call as officers assessed the scope of the collision, ending as a confirmed traffic collision with units on scene.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck?
Yes. When vehicles stop or slow suddenly on a ramp or freeway lane, trailing traffic often has little time to react, which can trigger a second or third collision before the scene is secured.
What makes multi-vehicle crashes hard to investigate?
Investigators have to determine the order in which each vehicle struck another, which can require reviewing damage patterns, witness accounts and any available video before a sequence can be confirmed.
What causes multi-vehicle pile-ups?
Common factors include sudden braking, lane congestion near on-ramps, limited visibility and following too closely, though the specific cause of any individual crash is determined only after investigators review the scene.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in San Diego, CA
If you're involved in a crash with several other vehicles, stay inside your car if it's unsafe to exit, and turn on hazard lights if possible. Check yourself and passengers for injuries before moving, and wait for emergency responders to direct traffic around the scene. Even if you feel fine, consider a medical evaluation afterward, since some injuries like whiplash or internal bruising don't show symptoms right away. Exchange information with other drivers only when it's safe to do so, and request a copy of the official report once it's available for your records.
