SAN DIEGO, San Diego County, Calif., Oct. 12, 2026 — At least one person was hurt and medics were called to the scene after a speeding car reportedly crossed lanes and struck another vehicle and a tree late Saturday night, October 10, on southbound I-805 near Market Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to radio traffic reviewed by the CHP, a silver Ford Mustang was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crossed lanes and collided with a Kia before also striking a tree near the freeway shoulder. The Mustang reportedly came to rest blocking the middle lanes, prompting an initial hazard call before the collision was confirmed.

The driver of the Mustang stayed at the scene and appeared physically unharmed, the CHP log indicates. The extent of injuries to occupants of the other vehicle has not been released. A caller also reported that a man involved in the crash followed another driver and made threats, an incident the CHP classified as a possible hit-and-run violation; officers were sent to investigate that report separately from the medical response.

The crash knocked down a light pole on the right shoulder, exposing wires that prompted an electrical safety check by Caltrans crews before the area was declared clear. Several lanes were shut down for a time while crews worked, with one lane closure persisting into the early morning hours, the CHP said. A tow was requested to remove the vehicles once all parties declined further medical attention at the scene.

The California Highway Patrol has not released names, ages, or a final cause. The incident remains under investigation.

Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

What Makes High Speed Crashes So Damaging on Freeways Like I-805

Speed does not just make a crash more likely. It changes how much energy is released when vehicles finally stop moving. A car traveling well above freeway speed carries far more kinetic energy than one moving at the posted limit, and that energy has to go somewhere once metal meets metal or a vehicle leaves the roadway and hits a fixed object like a tree. The faster the closing speed, the less time any safety system, airbag, seatbelt, or crumple zone, has to manage that energy before it reaches the people inside.

Vehicles are engineered to crush in controlled ways at the front and rear, directing force away from the cabin. But that design only works within a certain speed range. Past a certain threshold, the crush zones run out of room to absorb impact before the frame itself starts to give way, and a secondary strike, like hitting a tree after an initial collision, adds a second burst of force the vehicle was not built to manage in sequence.

Impairment and fatigue often sit quietly behind these events. A driver who is tired or affected by alcohol or drugs reacts more slowly to a lane drift or a vehicle ahead, and that delay often shows up later as excessive speed or a failure to correct course before impact. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 36 percent of motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes were speeding in 2023, a pattern that reflects how speed and impaired judgment frequently appear together across crash types, not just motorcycle crashes alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does speed really change the outcome of a crash?

Even modest increases in speed raise crash energy sharply, since kinetic energy grows with the square of velocity. A crash at higher speed means less time to brake or steer away from danger, and more force transferred into both vehicles on impact.

Why does distracted driving remain such a common factor in freeway crashes?

A driver looking away from the road for even a few seconds can miss a lane drift, a slowing vehicle, or a hazard ahead. At freeway speeds, a vehicle covers a long distance in that short span, leaving little time to react once the driver looks back up.

Do weather and road surface conditions make crashes more likely?

Wet pavement, debris, poor lighting, and uneven road surfaces all reduce tire grip and increase stopping distance. Combined with speed, these conditions make it harder for a driver to correct a lane departure before a collision occurs.

What should someone do immediately after being involved in a crash like this?

Move to a safe location if possible, check for injuries, and call 911. Stay at the scene, exchange information with other involved drivers, and wait for law enforcement to document the incident before leaving.

What to Do After a Car Accident in San Diego, CA

If you're involved in a crash on a San Diego freeway, try to move your vehicle out of traffic lanes if it's safe to do so, and turn on hazard lights to warn oncoming drivers. Call 911 right away, even if injuries seem minor, since some symptoms take hours to appear.

Remember to stay with your vehicle until officers arrive and exchange contact and insurance information with anyone else involved. Try to take photos of the scene if you're able, and seek a medical evaluation promptly, particularly after any high speed impact, since internal injuries are not always obvious right away. Keep a copy of the official collision report once it's available, as it may be useful for insurance or medical follow-up.
