Frequently Asked Questions
Why are motorcycle crashes more likely to cause serious injury?
Riders have no frame, airbags, or seatbelt to absorb a crash, so even a lower speed impact can throw them from the bike and onto the pavement or into another vehicle.
How do left-turning cars cause motorcycle collisions?
A common pattern involves a driver turning left or merging without seeing an oncoming motorcycle, often because the bike is smaller and harder to judge in distance and speed than a car.
What can drivers do to watch for motorcycles?
Checking mirrors and blind spots an extra time before changing lanes or turning, and allowing more following distance, gives drivers a better chance of spotting a motorcycle before it's too close to react.
What should a rider do after a motorcycle crash?
Move out of traffic if possible, call 911, and get checked by medical personnel even if injuries seem minor, since some injuries don't show symptoms right away.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Accident in San Diego, CA
After any motorcycle crash, getting a medical evaluation is the first priority, even for riders who feel able to walk away. Adrenaline can mask pain from fractures or head injuries for hours. It helps to request a copy of the CHP or police report once it's available, photograph the scene and any damage if it's safe to do so, and get contact and insurance information from everyone involved. Riders in San Diego should also keep records of any medical visits and repair estimates, since those documents matter later regardless of how the incident is ultimately resolved.
