SAN DIEGO, San Diego County, Calif., Oct. 4, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash shut down southbound Interstate 5 near Gilman Drive early on Saturday morning, October 3, after a vehicle rolled over and blocked traffic, the California Highway Patrol said. At least one person was reported injured.

The California Highway Patrol said the collision was first reported as a two- to three-vehicle crash shortly after 1:20 a.m., with one vehicle overturned. Within minutes, the count grew, and radio traffic described as many as five vehicles involved, including a van, a sedan, and a truck. The agency's log said two vehicles had airbags deployed.

All lanes except the fastest lane were blocked in the immediate aftermath, according to dispatch traffic, and officers later reported all lanes temporarily stopped as crews worked the scene. Fire crews were reported blocking additional lanes as a safety buffer while personnel worked around the wreckage. One patient was described in radio traffic as having neck pain and was taken to a hospital, though further details on that person's condition have not been released.

A gray Toyota Camry involved in the crash was reported to have major damage, authorities said. Tow trucks were requested to begin clearing vehicles, and a second truck was called in as recovery work continued. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and the California Highway Patrol has not said whether any citations or further findings are expected.

Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Why Rollover Crashes Happen in Multi-Vehicle Pileups

Rollovers in multi-vehicle crashes often begin with a sudden chain reaction rather than a single driver error. When one vehicle brakes hard or gets struck from behind, following vehicles can clip a bumper or a wheel at an angle, and that sideways force is what tips a vehicle onto its side or roof, rather than a straight-on hit.

Taller vehicles, such as trucks, vans, and SUVs, carry their weight higher off the road. That raised center of gravity makes them more prone to tip when a tire catches a curb, a guardrail, or another car's frame during a crash, even at speeds that wouldn't roll a lower sedan. In a nighttime pileup where several vehicles are forced into unpredictable angles, those taller vehicles are the ones most likely to end up overturned.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 38 percent of pickup-occupant fatalities occurred in vehicles that rolled over in 2023. That figure reflects how much a vehicle's shape and height matter once a crash is underway, separate from how the initial collision happens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are rollover crashes so dangerous?

A rollover can throw unbelted occupants against the roof, windows, or out of the vehicle entirely, and the roof itself can crush inward as the vehicle tips. Multiple impacts during the roll, rather than a single hit, make injuries harder to predict.

Which vehicles are most prone to rolling over?

Vehicles with a higher center of gravity, such as pickup trucks, vans, and SUVs, tip more easily than sedans when a tire loses grip or catches an edge during a crash.

Does wearing a seat belt change survival odds in a rollover?

Yes. A seat belt keeps an occupant positioned inside the vehicle during a rollover, reducing the chance of being thrown against the interior or ejected.

What is a "tripped" rollover?

That's when a tire catches something, like a curb, soft shoulder, or another vehicle, and that sideways grip flips the vehicle, rather than the rollover starting from speed alone.

What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Rollover Crash in San Diego, CA

If you're involved in or witness a multi-vehicle crash on a freeway, move to a safe area away from traffic if possible and call 911 right away. Even if you feel fine, a medical check is worth it, since neck and back injuries from a rollover don't always show symptoms right away.

Keep track of who responded, which agency, and which hospital, if you or someone else is transported, since that information can be hard to piece together later. If you're a passenger or driver in a crash like this, write down what you remember as soon as you safely can, including lane positions and anything you noticed in the moments before impact. San Diego's freeway corridors see heavy overnight traffic, and clear information helps both responders and anyone trying to understand what happened.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
