SAN DIMAS, Los Angeles County, Calif., Oct. 23, 2026 — One person died early Friday morning, October 23, in a two-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 10 just west of Via Verde in San Dimas, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash prompted a full closure of the eastbound lanes and a SigAlert.
The CHP said a disabled sedan was first reported blocking a lane on eastbound I-10 before 3:30 a.m., with its hazard lights on. Within minutes, a second vehicle of unknown color was also reported stopped in a lane with hazards flashing. A short time later, officers confirmed a two-vehicle collision at the scene, with one vehicle blocking the carpool lane and the other blocking the middle lanes.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded to the scene. One fatality was confirmed.
The CHP initially diverted traffic to the right two lanes before ordering a full, hard closure of eastbound I-10 to allow for the investigation and cleanup. A SigAlert was issued for an estimated one hour, though hard closures of this kind often extend beyond the initial estimate. Tow services were called to clear the roadway, and Caltrans assisted with traffic control.
The cause of the crash remains under review. We are deeply sorry for the loss suffered by the victim's family.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does speed affect whether someone survives a crash? Yes. Higher speeds increase both the force of impact and the distance needed to stop, which raises the chances of serious injury or death, especially in crashes involving stopped or slow-moving vehicles.
Why does wearing a seat belt matter so much? A seat belt keeps a person in position during a collision and reduces the chance of being thrown against the interior of the vehicle or ejected, which are common causes of fatal injury in highway crashes.
What should a family do after a fatal crash? Families can request a copy of the official crash report once it's released, ask the investigating agency about the timeline for findings, and reach out to the coroner's office for information on next steps.
How do agencies investigate a fatal highway crash? Investigators typically document the scene, interview witnesses, examine the vehicles, and review any available video or data before determining a probable cause, a process that can take weeks or longer.
What to Do After a Highway Crash in San Dimas, CA
If you're involved in or witness a crash on a freeway like this one, try to move to a safe location if your vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so. Turn on hazard lights and call 911 right away. Even if you feel fine, seek a medical evaluation afterward, since some injuries from a collision don't show symptoms immediately. Stay in a safe spot away from moving traffic until help arrives, and if possible, note what you saw, including vehicle positions and lane blockages, which can help investigators later. Keep any paperwork from police or fire response, as it may be needed for insurance or further follow-up.
