The collision was reported around 6:56 p.m. and involved a gray Mazda 3 and a gray Honda sedan. A driver initially flagged down a passerby for help, and it was unclear at that time whether anyone was hurt, the agency said. Crews also responded for a possible fire as a precaution.
Within minutes, authorities upgraded the call from a collision with unknown injuries to one requesting ambulance response, dispatch records show. Eastbound Alum Rock Avenue at Dale Avenue was shut down while crews worked the scene, and a second ambulance was sent to the location.
Damage reports describe the Mazda with damage to its left side and the Honda with front-end damage. The vehicles were later towed from the scene by a private tow company.
The extent of any injuries has not been released. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
