SAN JOSE, Santa Clara County, Calif., Oct. 16, 2026 — Two vehicles collided on Thursday evening, October 15, on eastbound State Route 237 near Zanker Road in San Jose, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash left at least one person with minor injuries, the agency said.
The California Highway Patrol said a gray Honda and a silver Toyota sedan collided on the right shoulder of eastbound SR-237, just west of the Zanker Road exit. The crash was initially logged as reported with unknown injuries before the CHP updated it to a minor-injury collision.
A driver of the gray Honda reportedly declined ambulance transport at the scene, and that vehicle was said to be drivable afterward, per CHP radio traffic. It was not immediately clear whether anyone in the Toyota was hurt.
The collision blocked part of the right shoulder and was visible to traffic approaching from the westbound side. No other details, including a possible cause, have been released. The crash remains under investigation.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes crashes like this one?
Rear-end and side-swipe collisions on freeways usually stem from following too closely, sudden lane changes, or a driver's delayed reaction to slowing traffic ahead. Investigators have not released a cause for this crash.
Does speed make a difference in how severe a crash is?
Yes. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force of impact, which tends to raise the risk of injury even in crashes involving just two vehicles.
Why is distracted driving considered so risky on highways?
Taking your eyes off the road for even a few seconds at freeway speed means traveling a long distance blind, which can turn a routine lane change or slowdown into a collision.
What to Do After a Car Accident in San Jose, CA
If you're involved in a crash on a busy freeway, try to move to the shoulder if the vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so, then turn on hazard lights. Check yourself and any passengers for injuries, and call 911 even if injuries seem minor, since some symptoms show up later. Get checked by a medical professional as soon as possible, exchange information with the other driver, and request a copy of the CHP or police report once it's available. Photos of the scene and vehicle damage can help later if there are questions about what happened.
