Frequently Asked Questions
How can drivers avoid getting caught in a highway pile-up?
Keeping a safe following distance, slowing down in heavy traffic, and staying alert for brake lights ahead can give drivers more time to react before a chain-reaction crash develops.
What should I do if I come upon a crash scene on the freeway?
Slow down well before reaching the scene, turn on hazard lights, and move into a lane farther from the incident if it's safe to do so. Avoid stopping to look, and follow any instructions from responders directing traffic.
Why does following distance matter so much in highway crashes?
A longer gap between vehicles gives drivers more time to stop or steer around a sudden slowdown, which can prevent a single crash from turning into a multi-vehicle pile-up.
