SAN JOSE, Santa Clara County, Calif., Oct. 12, 2026 — Three vehicles collided on southbound State Route 87 near Curtner Avenue Sunday afternoon, October 11, and one vehicle rolled over, according to the California Highway Patrol. At least one person was reported seriously hurt, and a person was seen lying in the roadway after the crash.

The CHP said a vehicle reportedly lost control and struck a wall before the three vehicles came together, involving a sedan, an SUV and another passenger car. Dispatch logs describe the rolling vehicle as flipping twice before landing upright. The crash blocked multiple lanes, including the two right-most lanes and later the exit lane onto Curtner Avenue, as traffic backed up through the area.

Emergency crews requested ambulance response to the scene for at least one injury, and tow trucks were called to clear the vehicles once the roadway was secured.

Investigators continue reviewing the collision. We hope everyone who was hurt makes a speedy recovery.

Why Rollovers Happen in Multi-Vehicle Freeway Crashes

A rollover does not usually start with a dramatic cause. It often begins with a sudden steering correction, a tire catching an edge or curb, or a side impact that pushes a vehicle sideways hard enough to break its grip on the road. Once a vehicle starts sliding sideways at speed, the same momentum that kept it moving forward now works against its balance.

Vehicle shape matters as much as speed. Taller vehicles with a higher center of gravity, like SUVs and pickups, tip more easily than low sedans because their weight sits further from the ground. When a sideways slide meets friction, that height becomes a lever, and the vehicle can tip and roll rather than simply skid to a stop.

Freeway rollovers often happen inside a larger pileup because the first loss of control forces other drivers to react fast, braking or swerving in close traffic. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 20 percent of passenger-car occupant fatalities occurred in vehicles that rolled over in 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a "tripped" rollover?

Most rollovers are "tripped," meaning the vehicle was already sliding sideways when a curb, soft shoulder, guardrail or another vehicle caught a tire or wheel and caused it to tip, rather than the vehicle rolling on flat, open pavement.

How can drivers reduce rollover risk?

Keeping speed appropriate for conditions, avoiding sudden oversteering, and maintaining tire pressure and tread all help a vehicle keep its grip on the road during a sudden maneuver.

Are rollovers more common on certain roads?

They cluster on freeways and highways where speeds are higher and on curves or exit ramps where sideways forces build up quickly during a lane change or loss of control.

What injuries are common in rollover crashes?

Occupants can be thrown against the roof, window or door frame as the vehicle turns over, which can cause head, neck and spinal injuries, especially if seatbelts are not worn.
